The Cape Peninsula has a warm and a cold side (it’s got more to do with prevailing winds than with oceans or currents), making for one of the richest and most diverse marine ecosystems in the world. The Peninsula is also graced with long stretches of protected coastline and deeper water sanctuaries, guaranteeing the natural world is kept intact.

Tours usually start on the warm False Bay or eastern side of the Peninsula, visiting the Dalebrook Marine Reserve at low tide in order to explore the rock pools before moving on to atmospheric Kalk Bay fishing harbour to see what the fishers have brought in for “catch of the day”. Next is Simons Town naval town and the famous penguin breeding colony at Boulders Beach. An alternative is to start with a boat trip from Hout Bay harbour out to Duiker Island, nursery to several thousand Cape fur seals.

The climax of the tour is on reaching Cape Point, grand exclamation mark at the bottom of the African continent. Here there is the opportunity of exploring that botanical wonder, an entire floral kingdom within one small geographical region. With luck you will see the Cape Point baboon troop, TV stars when it was discovered they get much of their diet is seafood from the intertidal zone.

An alternative itinerary, depending on the season, is a trip up the Cape West Coats to Langebaan Lagoon, a RAMSAR site that is part of the West Coast National Park. The shore and wading birds gather here in tens of thousands in summer. There is also a famous fossil site at Langebaanweg which reveals a sub-tropical coastal environment with many strange and extinct creatures of around 10,000 years ago.
